Photobooks of 2019: Rachel and Gregory Barker
Young New York by Ethan James Green
To have your first book published by Aperture is impressive. In Young New York Ethan James Green shows a graceful approach to portraiture, recording the LGBTQ community of Corlears Hook Park, on the Lower East Side. This is a book that will only get better with time.
House Hunting by Todd Hido
A reprint, but a very beautiful one. Printed on heavy weight matte art paper, using cutting-edge technologies in both the pre-press and production phases, this new edition of House Hunting stays true to the original design and format while delivering even more accurate color rendition and nuances in tone and saturation. It’s a must have for your book collection.
The Pillar by Stephen Gill
The Pillar is Gill’s follow up to one of our favourite books of the past decade Night Procession. We are once again masterfully taken into a familiar and yet uncanny world. The book also includes a wonderful essay by a favourite writer of ours, Karl Ove KnausgÃ¥rd.
I Know How Furiously Your Heart is Beating by Alec Soth
The sequencing in this book is a masterclass in the use of colour, with soft pastel pinks and greens effortlessly flowing from one page to another. It’s definitely one of our favourite books of the year.
The End of Industry by John Myers
The final chapter in a trilogy that must now include every single image Myers ever printed. This book is a beautiful finale to the series, and only leaves us wanting to see more.
The Park by Kohei Yoshiyuki
A beautiful reprint of Kohei Yoshiyuki’s series, The Park, taken with infrared film and flash in Japan’s Shinjuku, Yoyogi and Aoyama Parks during the 1970s, capturing the illicit sexual encounters that happened there. If you don’t already own it, now is the time!
